Busy IS Good!!

Hello!  It's been a couple of weeks since we last spoke.  I pray all is well.  I've been super busy -- busy IS good!!  I've been dying to tell you guys and now I can finally spill the beans....Pink & Pigtails now has an exclusive boutique line.  Even more exciting is that it can be found at a lovely online boutique called Lilly James!  That's right...Pink & Pigtails is in a store (all teeth while I'm typing this!)  Many of you are already familiar with this boutique, but for those who are not.......GO!!  You know how I feel about stylish child appropriate attire and Lilly James meets all my expectations.  They also have items for the little fella in your life as well as yourself.  I believe they are in the process of expanding their adult line and I can't wait.  Remember, mommies can/should be stylish too!!!

Anyway, I sent my first shipment out last week, so I don't believe the items are on the site yet.  However, these items will NOT be available through the Pink & Pigtails site.  I'm so excited!  I have also been busy working on some items for another designer that I love.  I have to keep this one hush for a little longer until the pics are ready and etc.  Like I said, I have been busy -- busy IS good!! With all that in mind, I still have been adding a few new items to the Spring 2012 line.  Take a look!

Above is Item 12-12 being modeled by the LOVELY Peyton E.  This is a blue handmade stretch lace headband with a simple pink rosette...simply adorable and comfortable!!!  Next, is Item 11-12 (guess I should have posted this one first).  It's a double layered fabric bow with a black/white damask print.  Perfect for all you bow lovers that want something different from the traditional ribbon deisgns.

Well, that's it and all!  As you can see, I've been quite busy and I'm grateful about it because busy IS good!!!

Young Style -- Does That Term Make Sense??

I was sitting at my computer looking at my items, thinking about the pics I'm awaiting to post and the designs still in my head.  I began to ask myself a variety of different questions.  Some were fueled by excitement over the projects that I have been working on.  Some were mixed with fear and doubt (pardon my honesty).  However, one emerged that I really began to ponder....."Does stylish attire for little people make sense?"  I know....now is a fine time to ask this question....lol!  As a mom/consumer it does in my opinion.  YES, I felt this way prior to Pink & Pigtails:).  Actually, it's why I started Pink & Pigtails.  However, being practical is a MUST for me as a parent too.  In addition, I too like adjectives such as "adorable" and "so cute" when I'm selecting for my kids....especially my daughter.

I realize the definition of terms such as adorable, style, practicality and quality varies among many.  For me, the four terms CAN....SHOULD....work together in my designs and/or purchases.  She (my daughter) should be able to get some wear out of an item when purchased (or created by mommy).  Now, a practical purchase doesn't not mean she can wear it everyday.  Nor does it mean it's an appropriate item for school, church, the playground, her annual physical AND the upcoming birthday party.  "I" define the term "practical" simply as my daughter's ability to wear the item with other items in her closet!!  This is my rule of thumb for EVERY purchase.  We will take one dress and coordinate it many ways.  It will be worn one way for church and entirely different for Chuck E. Cheese (that darn place drives me crazy!).  As for adorable, she should be dressed child appropriate.  When she puts it on, she should not loose her innocence, and YOUNG femininity.  Like most moms, I too want to get all warm and fuzzy when she's fully dressed and says "look at me mommy!".  She should always look like the little lady that I'm raising her to be!

Why am I going sharing all this???  Well, I often hear other parents speak of style as if it can't or should not be considered when it comes to child fashion.   Moreover, many speak as if young style is almost a taboo term.  It is possible!  Take these two new items for example:

This is Item 9-12 and it's new to the Pink & Pigtails' 2012 line.  This is a simple organza bloom with french netting.  OK, this may NOT be ideal for her school uniform and etc.  However, it works with denim.  It works with her Easter attire.  It works for hanging out with her friends (of course I'm referring to my older fans).  This works for the family pictures.  It fits my above mentioned definition of a practical purchase.  Likewise, this model looks her age.  Also, the darn item is simply cute and oh-so-stylish (I will work on my modesty...or the lack thereof )!

This is Item 10-12 and it too is part of the the Spring 2012 line.  It's a simple frayed fabric sash headband that can be worn in a variety of ways.  It's machine washable, cotton and bound to coordinate with so much.  Again....practical, comfy, stylish and age appropriate (tween - up).

As I type this, I realize that I have answered my lingering question.  Likewise, I feel more motivated than ever.  I'm going to go look at a movie with my kiddos (I'm sure it's something I have only seen 15+ times), put them to bed, grab my sewing machine and turn my ideas into designs.  One thing is for SURE...I'm NOT changing my tag line....style CAN begin YOUNG!!!

Talk to you soon!

Just What Happens Behind The Scences!

Hey guys!  I didn't post last week due to life (e.g. sick kids, sick mommy and etc).  This week, I thought I would take you where no others have gone before (I'm trying to keep a straight face).  You are going to get privileged access into my design process.  This is the first time I have released such private information to the world!!!  First, I will start by showing you the finished design.

OK, this is Item 7-12.  It too is part of the Pink & Pigtails Spring 2012 line.  This design was added this week to my site.  It's a floral fabric bow securely attached to a satin wrapped headband...perfect for the upcoming warm season.  OK...enough of that...let's move to the subject matter...the design process:)

  1. Around 10:00 PM, I selected a model from Modal Munchkin Models.  Basically, I looked over the comp card of the model above (Lexie T), inquired about her previous work and photography options.  I submit a request.  Why 10:00 PM???  I have a 7, 5, and 3 year old...I don't need to further explain.  I'm sure you get it:)!
  2. I began communicating with the model/parent regarding my needs for the shoot/pics.  I discuss my wants (hair, attire and etc) and the model/parent begins to send pics of various outfits and options.
  3. I also began to look at other Etsy boutiques for possible attire options.  Steps 1 & 2 lasted a little over a day.  The model/parent decided on the dress pictured above, which was designed by Faith Works 4 U.  I like it...so we move to step 4.
  4. Up at 6:30 AM and get my 7 year old ready for the bus.  Make sure he has his hat, lunch and homework.  We say a quick prayer, and he is off to to school.  I get my 5 & 3 year old feed and dressed.  I drop the 5 year old off to school and head to the fabric store with the 3 year old.  OK....THIS IS WHERE IT GETS CRAZY!!
  5. Very carefully, I have to select the fabric.  The selection process includes touching, pricing and envisioning all at the same time.  Now, while I'm doing this, I'm also opening a bag a pretzels for my 3 year old.  I'm then stopping to take him to the bathroom AGAIN and cleaning up the pretzels he decided to dump in the floor.  I get up what I can, the others are crunching under my feet and cart.
  6. I finally get to the cutting table followed by the cashier to pay for my purchase.  I leave a trail of pretzels in every isle..LOL!!!
  7. We make it out the store and I have not had a nervous breakdown...well not a major one....LOL!
  8. Get home, fix lunch, pick the kids up from school, go over homework, cook dinner, pack lunch for tomorrow, baths, say prayers and etc.  NOTICE YOU DON'T SEE WHERE I SAT DOWN YET!!
  9. OK, it's around 10:00 AGAIN, I start designing.  I inspect the design and its meets all my quality control specs.
  10. I type a 1-2 page spec sheet (my outline regarding hair, setting, agreed upon attire and etc.) that I forward to the model AND Moda Munchkin Models.  In addition, I make sure the model/parent knows how much I appreciate their support.  I package the item for shipping. I also sweep and clean up my mess.  Tomorrow will have a mess of its own....I can't afford to leave this mess too!
  11. Wake up and repeat step 4.
  12. Repeat Step 5 with the same 3 year old...this time it's the post office and its postage supplies I'm cleaning up, NOT pretzels.  As for the bathroom, he has to hold it until we make it home..lol.
  13. About a week later, I receive the pics, give my thanks to the model and Natalie Kimball Photography, list the item on Esty, Facebook and other sites.  Of course, I didnt' start ANY of this until approximately 10:00 PM
So there you have it and the item is ONLY $13.50.....NOT BAD AT ALL..lol!!!

What's An Accessory???

An accessory is defined as the following:

an article or set of articles of dress, such as gloves, earrings, or a scarf, that adds completeness, convenience, attractiveness, etc., to one's basic outfit.

When I read this definition, I got really excited!  An accessory DOES add completeness, convenience, attractiveness and the like to a BASIC OUTFIT!  However, many don't think this definition is applicable to child fashion.  Of course I totally disagree; thus, I created Pink & Pigtails.  Her wardrobe should have all the essential elements that make an outfit complete and that includes the proper hair embellishment. I try my best to create designs that are versatile, easy/no fuss and convenient.  I truly understand, I have a 5 year old who wants to be cute, but comfortable too!!!  As for attractiveness, I work hard to meet your needs in this area as well.  Hmmm...Let's examine this week's newly listed item:

This is item 5-12 and its the latest addition to the Pink & Pigtails' Spring 2012 line.

This is a hair bloom made from red and white Seersucker fabric.  In my opinion, I think it's attractive AND easy/convenient (attached by a simple alligator clip).  Likewise, this design WILL actually complete any basic coordinating outfit that's part of her Spring/Summer wardrobe.

With this in mind, I think I'm truly designing "accessories"...well at least according to the folks at Dictionary.com!

P.S. I must thank Natascha's Photography and Moda Munchkin Models for the awesome photos!  Much love!!!!

2012 Spring Kiddie Fashion Trends...For Girls Only!

Happy New Year Everyone!!!  2012 is here and the fashion world is completely over winter.  It's all about spring trends.  I started doing my research about 2 months ago to determine exactly what was "in" as it relates to apparel for girls.  That makes sense right?  I can't design an embellishment if I have no idea what I'm embellishing...lol!! Based on my scientific findings and "connects" in the retail/fashion industry (lol), spring designs for young girls are full of color and femininity (some of my favs).  In addition, I have seen a lot of stripes, polka dots, florals, ruffles and lace!!

As for color themes, soft hues are hot!  While the designs are colorful, the hues are more soft/muted.  Soft pink rather that hot pink.  Corals, grey, cream and the like are everywhere.  Moreover, it seems quite a few designers have favored nautical color combos for their items.  As for style, vintage-inspired designs are "it".  Likewise, it is oh-so-stylish if your little lady doesn't match..lol!  The mixing of prints is ok this season.  Many clothing designers are coordinating in terms of hues ONLY.  Your little lady can now wear zig-zag stripes, flowers and polka dots all at the same time..LOL!

So I took my data, sat down and began to brainstorm ideas on how to mix my findings with Pink & Pigtails' overall style.  This was NOT hard!  Remember, vintage, lace and femininity are all part of Pink & Pigtails. As a result, I have begun posting part of the Spring 2012 line to my site.  Take a look!

This is Item 4-12...a Frayed Fabric Sash Headband!  I like the floral print coupled with the frayed fabric.  I'm also in love with the oh-so-many ways to wear this item.

Preparing for 2012

Surprise!! I'm so excited about Pink & Pigtails' new blog!

This blog is one of the many new things I had to accomplish as I prepare for 2012 both personally and professionally.  The primary purpose of this blog is to keep subscribers/fans updated on items, ideas, projects and me!  It's also an opportunity for you to join Pink & Pigtails on its journey of growth, exposure and lessons learned!  As I think about 2012, I HAVE to reflect on 2011.  It's been quite an interesting year professionally. As a designer, I finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up..lol!  What I'm trying to say is that I FINALLY matured as a designer and became comfortable with what "I" like.  As a result, I now feel more focused and have a clearer direction.  Pink & Pigtails IS different than most when thinking about hair accessories for young girls.  Pink & Pigtails is style!  Pink & Pigtails is quality and integrity!  Pink & Pigtails is lace.  Pink & Pigtails is based on vintage inspirations.  Pink & Pigtails is a love for both designer and vintage fabrics.  Pink & Pigtails is femininity!!  It only took me 3 years to derive at such a definition..lol!

As I think of 2011, I must highlight some of my design favs.  Here they are:
I'm going to end with THANK YOU!  Thank you so much to God, my family, friends, customers, vendors fans, models, photographers and fellow designers.  You ALL play a vital role in Pink & Pigtails' continual success.  Good Bless and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

See you in 2012!
